What is Positive consultancy? How is it different from ‘normal ’consultancy?
When the consultants turn up in an organisation most people’s hearts sink: How many shortcomings are they going to find? What are they going to make us change? Will I get to keep my job?
‘Normal’ consultancy tends to see organisations as machines and the consultants as mechanics: It starts from the principle that there are problems that need fixing. So the consultants search out the broken parts and try to mend them.
Positive consultancy typically views the organisation as a living organism. It looks for the strengths that give life to the organisation and helps amplify them – even If, as often happens, the starting point is a problem needing a solution.
‘Normal’ consultancy often imposes radical solutions to the problems it finds: it likes to ‘re-engineer’ and to ‘right-size’ … no wonder people get nervous at the very idea. Positive consultancy, on the other hand works collaboratively with the people most involved to make positive changes that will lead to greater excellence and in this way overcome any issues currently holding the organisation back. The ‘solutions’ are more likely to come from the realm of positive psychology than from business process engineering.
